Bon soir, peeps. No pictures in this post, as my computer is busy downloading last week’s Stargate: Atlantis from iTunes and charging my PDA – it can only handle so much. I did want to drop in and say that I took the Effing Clapotis to Knit Night at my LYS, and it was very well received – yay! Everyone who’d made one comisserated with the sense of doom I felt about a skein and a half in; the sense that I would be knitting Clapotis for the rest of my life, and possibly yea, even into death and beyond. That middle stretch is a killer. But then, all of a sudden, you’re at the decreases, and then you’re off the circular and onto straights because the circ was just too unweildy for so few stitches, and then you’re binding off a whopping two stitches, and then you’re weaving in ends, and then omg you’re done. It’s a beautiful feeling.
What do you do when you’ve finished a never-ending project? Do you immediately start something new? Do you browse patterns and knitting books, idly flipping through the pages? Or do you take a complete knitting break? I tend to fiddle around – I’ll cast on for three or four different projects, not really starting anything, but just messing around with yarn and needles. Sometimes I’ll knit a baby sock. Sometimes I’ll cast on and unravel the same fifteen stitches over and over again, different needles. Sometimes I’ll wind yarn. It’s a little mini-break, a chance to relax before starting the next project.
My next project? Thrummed mittens. Oh yes, I’m getting ready for the Chicago winter, don’t you doubt it. I about froze to death last year because I wasn’t prepared. This year – thrummed mittens. Alpaca wool, lined with roving from Louet. I have an ulterior motive. I really want to play with roving, but I’m not that interested in learning to spin. Thrummed mittens satisfies that need. Rock on, mittens.
