Just a quick note to say that while I have been remiss on the blogging front, I have been knitting up a storm. I made baby booties and forgot to take a picture of them (dammit), the thrummed mittens are going well, as are a scarf and various other projects. But I’ve been spending a lot of my time tweaking my dad’s old computer – deleting files, defragging the harddrive, etc. ad nauseum. Geeky fun, actually. I’m hoping I’ve managed to speed it up some.

Anyway, soon I will have pictures and words to go with them!

So. As I said last time, I have a new project – thrummed mittens. I’m kind of going off of this pattern, although I’ve never actually used a pattern for mittens. They just don’t seem that hard to me. Granted, I tend to make them too big; my last pair ended up being over-mittens, worn over the gloves. Totally worth it.

So, anyway. Thrummed mittens – mittens with roving knit into every few stitches, with the long end of the roving inside. They’re supposed to be incredibly warm, and they look very cute.

Thrummed mitten fixins

Frog Tree Alpaca, chunky weight, and Louet Roving, Silver Grey Corriedale. Yay, roving! It’s so soft and shiny, and I have SO much of it.

Aren’t they pretty together? Shiny and soft. I have high hopes.

The thrum has begun

And here is the beginning! I’m really pleased with how the colors go together, and I have to stop every few stitches and stick my hand inside, just to enjoy the warmth. And the inside is hilarious:

Mitten guts! Awesome.

Bon soir, peeps. No pictures in this post, as my computer is busy downloading last week’s Stargate: Atlantis from iTunes and charging my PDA – it can only handle so much. I did want to drop in and say that I took the Effing Clapotis to Knit Night at my LYS, and it was very well received – yay! Everyone who’d made one comisserated with the sense of doom I felt about a skein and a half in; the sense that I would be knitting Clapotis for the rest of my life, and possibly yea, even into death and beyond. That middle stretch is a killer. But then, all of a sudden, you’re at the decreases, and then you’re off the circular and onto straights because the circ was just too unweildy for so few stitches, and then you’re binding off a whopping two stitches, and then you’re weaving in ends, and then omg you’re done. It’s a beautiful feeling.

What do you do when you’ve finished a never-ending project? Do you immediately start something new? Do you browse patterns and knitting books, idly flipping through the pages? Or do you take a complete knitting break? I tend to fiddle around – I’ll cast on for three or four different projects, not really starting anything, but just messing around with yarn and needles. Sometimes I’ll knit a baby sock. Sometimes I’ll cast on and unravel the same fifteen stitches over and over again, different needles. Sometimes I’ll wind yarn. It’s a little mini-break, a chance to relax before starting the next project.

My next project? Thrummed mittens. Oh yes, I’m getting ready for the Chicago winter, don’t you doubt it. I about froze to death last year because I wasn’t prepared. This year – thrummed mittens. Alpaca wool, lined with roving from Louet. I have an ulterior motive. I really want to play with roving, but I’m not that interested in learning to spin. Thrummed mittens satisfies that need. Rock on, mittens.

le clapotis, c'est finis!

Mon clapotis, laissez-moi vous le montrer.

I am so glad to be done with this project. It’s gorgeous, and the fault with it in no way lies in the pattern, but with my bad choices. Slick yarn plus slick needles equals frustration galore.

I’ve also finished the Embossed Leaves socks, but I can’t get a good picture of them to save my life. Believe me when I say that they’re awesome.

I’m a little between projects now. I still have some single socks lying around that need mates, and some babies to knit for, and The Sweater, but I find myself disinclined to do any of that. A knitting malaise? Perish the thought! And yet, that’s where I find myself. I really need to finish that scarf for the LYS; it’s been hanging around a long time, and I would probably be in trouble if they weren’t as nice as they are. But dude – you knit a wool scarf in 90 degree heat. It isn’t fun.

what a sky

The sky outside my office window last week. That’s the Sears Tower to the left, and holy hell about to rain upon us. We’ve had some crazy weather lately.
